Shell fuels - Ethanol
What is ethanol?
Ethanol is a renewable non-fossil fuel. It’s made using byproducts from the sugar industry, or from grains like wheat, sorghum or corn.
Why is ethanol being blended with petrol?
It’s a legal requirement to blend petrol with up to 5% ethanol, as part of both the EU and UK government’s commitment to promoting biofuels and reducing CO2 emissions. This means we are unable to sell fuel that doesn’t contain ethanol, as is the case for most other major retailers.
What is the ethanol content in your fuels?
Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Shell V-Power Unleaded never contain more than 5% ethanol.
Why don’t you have labels warning customers that your petrol is blended with ethanol?
As blending a small amount of ethanol into petrol is considered safe for use in today’s vehicles, there is no legal requirement to label it.
Is it safe for me to fill up my car with ethanol-blended petrol?
Most vehicles manufactured after 1991 are suitable for petrol with 5% ethanol. Unfortunately we can’t provide advice for specific vehicles due to the wide range of fuel systems used. If you are unsure, contact your vehicle manufacturer for further information.
If you have a historical car, or your manufacturer is no longer in operation, you can find some guidance on The Federation of British Historical Vehicle Clubs’ website.
Please remember that all advice provided is the view of the Federation of British Historical Vehicle Club, and that Shell accepts no responsibility for third party advice.
Where can I fill up with petrol that contains no ethanol?
By law, we only sell ethanol-blended petrol. Most outlets are also bound by this legislation.
Does Shell sell an additive that can prevent the corrosion caused by ethanol in fuel?
We do not sell an additive specifically to be used with ethanol.
My engine was damaged by the ethanol in Shell petrol. How can I claim compensation for the cost of repair?
We regret that we can’t compensate our customers for the use of petrol which we are legally required to sell with up to 5% ethanol. We work continuously to ensure our fuels comply at all times with the national specifications for fuel quality.
What is Shell’s position on ethanol being blended into petrol?
We support the initiative to reduce CO2 emissions, and recognise blending ethanol into petrol is one of the ways to achieve this.
Will the ethanol content increase, and by how much?
We currently have no plans to increase ethanol content in petrol beyond the 5% required by UK law. For the latest information on this legislation, please consult the Department for Transport’s website.
Fuel save - General
What is in Shell FuelSave and how does it work?
More and more drivers want to get most out of every drop of fuel. That’s why we’ve developed our most advanced fuel economy formulations ever. Both are designed to save you fuel from the first fill, but the technologies and the way they work are different.
Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded is enriched with Shell Efficiency Improver, formulated to reduce engine energy loss by lubricating where normal engine oils are less effective. This improves your engine’s efficiency, which can lead to improved fuel economy.
Shell FuelSave Regular Diesel features a Shell Efficiency Improver designed to ignite and burn more effectively, leading to more efficient combustion. Shell FuelSave Diesel also protects against the buildup of deposits, further improving your engine’s efficiency.
Is there an additional cost for this extra benefit?
No. These are our regular fuels at regular prices, designed to help you save fuel.
Does Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded contain ethanol? Does this impact on fuel economy?
Yes. Ethanol has a lower calorific value than petrol, so less energy is released on combustion. Using any fuel containing ethanol may result in fewer miles-per-gallon when compared to pure, oxygenate-free gasoline.
Will Shell be introducing or delaying the introduction of E10 in the UK, given the problems in Germany?
We will align with UK E10 legislation and introduce E10 according to government timings and mandates.
For diesel cars, what impact does the introduction of B5 (B7) have on engine fuel efficiency?
Some reduction in efficiency is unavoidable, as biodiesel has a lower calorific value than diesel. This means that less energy is released upon combustion, so a vehicle achieves fewer miles-per-gallon than when running on pure, oxygen-free diesel. However, biofuels will help to reduce the overall impact of diesel fuels on the environment.
What percentage improvement in fuel economy can I expect from Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Diesel?
The savings you experience will vary due to the number of factors that affect fuel economy, such as vehicle, driving conditions and driving style.
When I save fuel, how much CO2 reduction does this equal?
Tests have shown that Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Diesel can help you save fuel, contributing towards CO2 emissions reductions associated with transport. However, overall CO2 savings across a market are hard to quantify, as the emissions of each car depend on a wide range of factors. As a result, we make no direct claims in this area.
Are Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Diesel available at all sites?
Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Diesel are available everywhere in the UK, except a small number of locations in the South West where the products cannot be supplied for logistical reasons.
I buy Shell V-Power because it is designed to help keep my engine in good condition and performing at its best, but Shell FuelSave contains the instantaneous Shell Efficiency Improver. Why should I continue to refuel with Shell V-Power?
Both fuels are composed differently and designed to provide different benefits to drivers. Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Diesel have been specifically designed to save fuel, whereas Shell V-Power Unleaded and Shell V-Power Diesel are designed to actively clean your engine.
Shell V-Power Unleaded is also formulated with Friction Modification Technology to help the engine turn more freely, and enhanced 99 RON octane quality to help engines deliver more power.
Shell claims that Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Diesel are designed to save fuel. I've also noticed that Shell Helix Ultra E claims up to 2% fuel economy savings can be made. How much fuel will I save by using them both?
By using both Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded or Diesel and Shell Helix Ultra E, you could benefit from additional fuel savings. However, as these products were formulated and tested to work in general usage, not specifically with Shell Helix Ultra E, we cannot quantify this exactly.

Shell & Motorist + Technical partnership
Why does Shell get involved in motorsports?
The key to making better fuels for our customers lies in our commitment to innovation through motorsport at the highest level. That’s why it is an integral part of our extensive R&D programme.
How do customers benefit from the current technical partnership with Ferrari?
Our technical partnership with Ferrari provides a fantastic test bed for technology and innovation, and an environment to test new fuels in extreme conditions. Friction Modification Technology is a great example of this ‘track-to-road’ thinking.
However, not all new technologies will make it into our road fuels, as some technologies we test are for the future rather than the short-term.
Isn’t Shell just another sponsor?
Our partnership started in the 1930s when we started working with Enzo Ferrari, and we still work alongside Scuderia Ferrari today. During that time we’ve built a database of approximately 5000 fuel and 8000 oil samples taken at Formula One races. It’s the perfect test-bed for transferring what we learn at the track to the fuels you find on the forecourt.
How successful is the technical partnership?
Our technical partnership with Scuderia Ferrari is one of the strongest and most established in the paddock. With our help, Scuderia Ferrari has won 10 constructors’ titles and 12 drivers’ championships.
How much time does Shell invest in its R&D for the Shell V-Power race fuel?
Our 50-strong team of technical staff invests over 21,000 hours a year into research and development to give Ferrari the competitive edge in Formula One.
Can Shell afford the Ferrari sponsorship because of huge profits from high oil prices?
We’ve been actively involved in motorsports since the 1930s, and are dedicated to ensuring this fantastic test bed for technology and innovation continues. Today we are the largest investors in R&D amongst the major oil companies. Our motorsports partnership is just one example of our commitment to develop better fuels for our customers.
Is Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded the same fuel that is used by Ferrari in Formula One?
The fuel we use at the races is very similar to the Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded you can use in your own car. This is because FIA regulations state that at least 99% of the same types of fuel components we use in the Formula One race fuel must be normally used in road fuels.
For example, both fuels use the same Friction Modification Technology, and you could even run the Scuderia Ferrari Formula One car on Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded road fuel. However, our race fuel does have a different formulation, in order to meet the extreme demands of Formula One.
Are all the Ferraris that leave the factory in Maranello filled with Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded?
Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded is currently not available in Italy. However, all Ferraris that leave Maranello are recommended to use Shell V-Power Unleaded.
